Restoring balance to our whenua, ecosystems, and identity — one native species at a time.
A Thriving Ecosystem
Our whenua supports rich biodiversity, with taonga species like tuatara, blue-clawed koura, and kiwi once thriving in dense native ngāhere that blanketed the hills. These ecosystems sustained generations, providing balance and nourishment to the land and people.
Kaitiakitanga and Forest Stewardship
Selective logging was once carried out with care, respecting the ngahere and using local resources sustainably. Today, native forests still protect pristine waterways and layered canopies, but face serious threats from introduced pests and expanding pine plantations.
Restoring and Protecting the Future
Through eco-sourced seed collection from our ngahere block, we ensure native plant species continue to flourish. Unlike plantation forestry, our forests absorb carbon, restore balance, and clean our air — a critical role in facing climate challenges.
Te Orewai Tupua Native Nursery’s Role
At Te Orewai Tupua Nursery, we gather seed, preserve it, and grow taonga species for riparian planting, afforestation, and wetland restoration. It’s an investment in biodiversity, resilience, and the health of future generations.
